What is Escuela Nueva?

Escuela Nueva means "new school" in Spanish, and since 1975 Escuela Nueva educational programs have been making schools and schooling a new enterprise. Developed initially in Colombia in 1975, Escuela Nueva has been adopted by 14 countries, and its successes have inspired educational reforms in more than 35 countries.

Escuela Nueva is distinguished by its self-paced educational materials, teacher training programs, classroom and school management activities, and community involvement strategies.

Who is Vicky Colbert?

Vicky Colbert is the founder of Escuela Nueva. She is a publicly recognized social entrepreneur by the Ashoka, Schwab, and Skoll Foundations, the first ever Clinton Global Citizen Award Winner, and a leading international advocate for educational change. Vicky Colbert serves as Executive Director of the Escuela Nueva Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia and she is a founding and current member of the Board of Escuela Nueva International.

How did Escuela Nueva get started?

Escuela Nueva started in Colombia in 1975 when Vicky Colbert teamed up with rural teachers to find a solution to the crisis in primary education. At the time, only half the rural children in the age group 6-12 were enrolled in schools, compared to 65% of children in the whole country.

Together with her colleagues, Vicky developed the first edition of the Escuela Nueva learning guides. The guides provided a resource and flexible instruction for students as well as guidance for teachers with limited time and training. Inherent to the guides were lessons promoting active and participatory learning that led to advances in both educational achievement and self-esteem.

Vicky nurtured and developed Escuela Nueva for nine years as Project Coordinator in the Ministry of Education. During the 1980s, in her capacity as Vice Minister of Education, Vicky shepherded the Escuela Nueva program through the policy making process, made it part of national educational policy, and expanded the model throughout rural areas, validating the methodology through independent evaluations. She formed Fundación Escuela Nueva Volvamos a la Gente in 1987 to continue promoting the model and adapting it to new populations.

What is the difference between Escuela Nueva International (ENI) and Escuela Nueva Foundation (ENF)?

ENI was founded to help bring Escuela Nueva to scale through international promotion and partnerships. The Escuela Nueva Foundation is the founder, authority, and primary implementer of the Escuela Nueva program. The organizations are separate legal entities with independent boards and control over their programs. However, we share a common vision and work closely together to develop a collaborative and successful Escuela Nueva international community.

Where has Escuela Nueva been adopted?

Developed initially in Colombia in 1975, Escuela Nueva has been adopted by 14 countries, and its successes have inspired educational reforms in more than 35 countries. One of the goals of ENI is to connect the Escuela Nueva network of committed educators, parents, policymakers, and partners around the world to learn from their experiences and facilitate the advancement of the model to new countries.
